If you are video gaming nut like I am, you mark the date for E3 on your calendar. And it has arrived.

E3, for those of you not familiar, is the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the largest gaming conference of the year, held in Los Angeles. This is the place where many developers show off their new products that are likely to be released this year, and anything else they have in store for consumers.

This is where Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony, EA, Ubisoft, Konami, THQ and Activision put up or shut up.

The highlight of last year's event was Microsoft's Project Natal -- their answer to the Nintendo Wii (minus the controller). They've since renamed it "Kinect." The Natal looked pretty awesome, demonstrated by one of the project engineers playing a game using only body gestures. It will take the Wii's philosophy of get-your-fat-ass-off-the-couch-and-burn-calories gaming to the next level, but is Natal ready for consumers?

Also big this year is a 3D game for the Xbox console called Crysis 2. Sony and Nintendo are also going to offer 3D games to consumers soon. Nintendo is reportedly introducing a glasses-free 3D version of its popular DS handheld.

Early in this prolonged recession, it looked like video game sales were holding steady, but game sales have declined by nearly 30 percent from a year ago. That means these companies are under a lot of pressure to dominate the market.
